Not all U.S. duty tours in Vietnam War were alike. For an administrative officer working in office in Saigon city who has never been close to combat, his tour can look like a peacetime duty. Sailors and aviators had perils and problems of their own. About 15% of the 2.8 million Vietnam veterans were in direct combat roles and at most one million were ever exposed to hostile fire. Army or Marine infantry ground troops, especially the Grunts on the line had a special experience that should be understood and remembered.
